The main collection of the Western Australian Maritime Museum is located on Victoria Quay in Fremantle, and contains galleries with themes such as the Indian Ocean, the Swan River, fishing, maritime trade, naval defence, and the successful America's Cup yacht Australia II.

Directions
Trains run from Perth City Railway Station to Fremantle. Buses run daily from Perth City Centre Bus Terminal to Fremantle Terminal outside the Railway Station. The free CAT bus runs around Fremantle every 10 minutes during the day from Fremantle Station. Esplanade Care Park No 2 is situated immediately in front of Shipwreck Galleries (Parking fees apply). Ticket parking is also available on Victoria Quary.

The submarine is the best part IMO.
I really enjoyed the WA Maritime Museum, and would happily add it to a lost of 'Must do' things for Perth/Fremantle.It's a very reasonable entry price and the range and layout of the exhibits is very well done. The building it'self is also architecturally impressive and adds to the experience.
HMAS Ovens is an Oberon Class submarine of the Royal Australian Navy next to the WA Maritime Museum and you access it by booking a tour, which is an additional cost to the museum entry fee. The tour last about 90mins and I'd advise you were comfortable, warm clothing and footwear. It's not suitable for people with less than minor mobility restrictions, or for large framed people, as you'll be climbing up and down steep ladders and squeezing through narrow entry points and doorways.
I really enjoyed the tour, as the guide was a former Navy serviceman and was extremely knowledgeable and ready with answers to any questions.
MY HISTORY
We attended as a part of a group of Seniors. We were fortunate to have one of the volunteers who came outside of his allotted time to give us a guided tour. There was a reasonable range of exhibits and in addition I was able to view a Pilot boat that I had served on for a short time. This boat had been stripped of it's modern cabin and brought back to its original format an added bonus was a Roman display which contained the most interesting range of artefacts.Very Modern Museum
The Museum was very modern, and is situated on the waterfront, near to the ferry terminals. HMAS Ovens is actually outside the museum, but can also be seen from the windows inside. It wasn't open to visitors on our visit.Adjacent to the Ovens is a small steam museum, which is staffed by volunteers and is well worth a visit.
The Museum has a replica of the Americas Cup, next to the yacht which won it.
We enjoyed our visit, and the visit to the cafe was very welcome too.
