Overview
Kookaburra Cottage is a 1990s weatherboard cabin at the Fern Gulley Retreat private nature reserve on the banks of the Blackwood River in Nannup. Simple yet functional, the magic of the cabin is the expansive verandah that overlooks the Blackwood — teeming with wildlife and humming with the sounds of the Australian bush. Guests have their own one bedroom private cabin with everything required for a restful, relaxing retreat. This is quintessential Nannup — low key, quiet luxury in nature.
The space
The Kookaburra Cottage was one of 5 cabins built in the 1990s on a private nature reserve just out of Nannup. Simple yet functional, the cabin has seen improvements over the years, but still resembles the low key holiday cabin that many have loved and still return to today.
The Kookaburra is a private one bedroom cottage with a separate bathroom, toilet, living space, kitchen, verandah and parking area. The bedroom has a king bed and includes all linens, spare blankets, an electric blanket for extra warmth and an electric log fire for those cool Nannup evenings. The bathroom is spacious, complete with a corner spa bath. The kitchen is equipped with cooking essentials - a stove top, a mini-electric oven, air-fryer and a fridge for cold storage.
The living space overlooks the verandah with a TV, Bose speaker for tunes and DVDs for an old school night in. You’ll also find coffee table books, novels from fellow travellers or even a board game but unfortunately we do not yet have wifi in the cottage - please use Telstra hotspot.
Dine inside or out depending on the weather, everything is fully undercover and there is a BBQ (electric) on the verandah. The cottage and the verandah overlook the Blackwood River and the beautiful bush surrounds — birds will come to feed every morning, and the groundskeepers alpacas may be roaming.
Hot or cold, the cottage has reverse cycle air-conditioning, ceiling fans, electric blankets and an electric log fire for ambience.
The cottage is located just 15 minutes by car from the town of Nannup, along a beautiful winding road that passes through wineries, farmland and bush reserve. It is far enough from town to feel a sense of seclusion, but close enough to everything you could possible need for your stay.
There is so much to do in Nannup and surrounds - the area is brimming with artisan produce and goods, slow activities like bushwalking or for the more adventurous - mountain biking with world class trails on your doorstep, not to mention a winery just across the road.
You're surrounded by six acres of bushland which is shared by the other cabin guests. Please tread lightly.
Guest access
Guests have full and private access to the standalone Kookaburra Cottage including a private verandah overlooking the Blackwood River. There is room for one vehicle under the covered parking bay outside the cottage. Guests are free to roam the surrounding nature reserve provided they are respectful of other guests and chalet owners.
The valley behind the cabin is ideal for a gentle stroll, to watch the visiting wildlife & colourful birds or to just admire the view from your verandah. When the river is up you can go for a dip or even a fish if it takes your fancy.
Please do not go onto the caretaker's property at Cabin #1 as this is a private residence.
No smoking inside.
No pets, unfortunately.
Other things to note
Nannup is a quaint town surrounded by forests in the southwest of Western Australia. It is fastly becoming internationally recognised for its cycling and mountain bike riding trails. Guests should download the Experience Nannup app for an overview of the best that the town and the region has to offer.
Kookaburra Cottage does not have wifi. Mobile phone reception and personal hotspot is only available if you are with Telstra.
The Balingup-Nannup road is one of the most magical drives in the southwest. Please take care as the road is frequented by wildlife, particularly at dusk. Drive slowly and appreciate the beauty
