Description
The 1850s convict-built Commissariat (government stores) building in the historic maritime precinct in Cliff Street, Fremantle, is a world-renowned centre for maritime archaeology exploration, research and painstaking conservation of the shipwreck relics. The Shipwreck Galleries feature displays on early exploration and shipwrecks along our treacherous coastline from as early as the 17th century. A highlight is the reconstructed stern of the Dutch ship Batavia wrecked in 1629.
Costs: Entry to the Shipwreck Galleries is by donation. Free guided tours of the Shipwreck Galleries, with tales of exploration, shipwreck, mutiny and murder, take place at 10am, 11am, 2pm and 3pm (please confirm at reception).
Opening Times: Open Daily 9.30am –5.00pm - Open Anzac Day 1.00-5.00. (No longer Closed on Wednesdays as of 20/10/10)

Worth the visit if you love history and shipwrecks!
We visited the WA Shipwrecks Museum in summer ... well worth it, especially for history buffs and fans of shipwrecks! It is near the Fremantle foreshore and harbor restaurant district. Extremely well maintained and an absolute attention to detail. Enjoy the visit!An exceptional interesting experience
My wife and I 'stumbled' across the WA Shipwrecks Museum on our day in Fremantle. We hadn't planned to visit it, but we were so glad we did. The museum is exceptionally well laid out and is full of interesting exhibits, displays, artefacts and information boards. The stand-out exhibit is probably the 'Batavia' Gallery, but there is so much more. We found it particularly interesting because of its focus on WA, and because references were made to some of the stories and events we had been made familiar with as a result of tours we had already taken, and it was interesting to find out more about some of these events and stories. Highly recommended.Wonderful artefacts brings things to life
We loved this small museum particularly the interesting artefacts from each of the featured shipwrecks. There is plenty to read and study regarding the ships that were lost along the Australian coast. Interestingly, we came across the names of the ships as we travelled down the coast to Albany in each of the towns.
