Description

On this very special historic property, situated in gorgeous farmland, the beauty of the surrounding countryside is all around. Architecturally designed by Sir Talbot Hobbs, a leading architect and First World War general, Hillside was built in 1911 for the newly-wed Morris Edwards and remained with the family for many years. In addition to farming their 1700 acres, the Edwards had business interests in York, led a vibrant social life and formed part of the rich tapestry of York society.

This is the area to appreciate the glory of the changing seasons; the emerald green of lush farmland in winter and star-studded crisp nights spent around your own wood fire. The myriad species of wild flowers in early spring and the singular beauty of the dry straw coloured landscape in summer. For the past century, Hillside has endured the changing seasons and this "grande dame" still keeps watch over this piece of paradise we are fortunate to call home.

If what you look for in a getaway is good service, beautiful surroundings and a great bed to sleep in, this traditional country retreat offers genuine hospitality and special attention to detail without being pompous or overbearing. We extend a warm and friendly welcome to experience firsthand, Hillside's peace and tranquillity, enjoy its rambling country gardens and extensive grounds. Here, you can park your car, walk into town instead of driving and enjoy a great night’s sleep after a day spent at your leisure.

Hillside Country Retreat prides itself on being pet friendly (with prior arrangement), as pets are permitted inside the rooms and cottages. There is also access to secure, outdoor enclosures, gated verandas, acres of land to roam and walk, and all dogs are welcome to be off their leads. So don't suffer pangs of guilt having to leave your precious pooch at home as we are pet friendly!

Hillside is the perfect holiday and weekend venue for couples, families and groups in getaway or celebratory mode to avail of our fabulous self-catering cottages or our very special Bed and Breakfast ensuite rooms.

We look forward to your visit so we can share its very special magic with you. Please see our website for full rates and accommodation options.

Directions

One of the great things about Hillside is that it is so accessible. Only just over an hour's drive east from the city of Perth - now a busy, bustling and often noisy hub - you are transported to a tranquil country retreat in York in the Avon Valley. Being the first inland town settled in 1831 and only 97kms away, York is Western Australia's most historically rich town. It is steeped in history and boasts many wonderful old buildings, so it is fitting that Hillside - a Federation-pile-with-a-past - sits in the historic heart of this famous Wheatbelt town.

Magnificent Retreat
We had the great privilege of staying 2 nights at the magnificent Hillside Country Retreat in York! Stunning grounds and cosy rooms with fires. The most comfortable European king size beds. Tasty breakky freshly cooked when we wanted. HIGHLY recommended as an escape from the hustle and bustle. 1 hour 15 minutes from home. Loved it! We will be back.

Great Place
It was a great place to stay, everything we found to be of a high standard, from arrival to departure.
