Allen, or Big Al, your tour guide is a Fremantle local, having been born and raised in Fremantle. He has been researching and writing about Fremantle's history for over thirty years so many of the tales that he tells in this walk are unique to this tour. Not that the words you hear are all his, for he also quotes the words of the early settlers which they used to describe Fremantle, or the feelings they held about living in Fremantle.
The tour is about two kms in length and takes approximately two hours, including time for a refreshment stop along the way. (Any costs incurred in the walk are not included in the price.) The tour is walked at a leisurely pace and goes past many of the recognized landmarks of Fremantle.
When you book this tour you are booking for the History and Heritage Tour, but you can see Fremantle through a number of different lenses, as listed below. So if you have an interest in any of those tell Big Al and subject to the mix of the tour group, he will endeavour to incorporate it into the tour.
History and Heritage: Tells the tale of Fremantle’s evolution from humble colonial port and fishing village to what we see today.
Dark secrets of Fremantle’s streets: Hear of duels, murders, sad deaths and mayhem along the streets of Fremantle.
American connections: You would be surprised how many connections Fremantle has to the United States. Take this tour to hear what Captain Shaw had to say about Fremantle!
Early Fremantle Hotels: Fremantle has had a lot of hotels which figure prominently in Fremantle’s history. This tour doubles up as a pub crawl as it includes a couple of hotel stops along the route. It is best taken with a couple of friends as an afternoon, or late afternoon tour. (Drink costs not included in price.)

All tours start from the grassed area on Round House Hill, just near the ship artwork. This is to the left of the Round House as you come up the stairs. (A visit to the Roundhouse and the Whalers tunnel, which are free to the public, are highly recommended.)

Walking history
What can you say. This is a brilliant tour. Alan was absolutely amazing. We (a couple) were lucky enough to have this tour to ourselves. As Alan took us around he asked what we already knew of various sites so he could adjust his oration so as not to cover what we already knew. This was a bonus as he ended up telling us so many other tales/stories that would not normally be covered. We got so carried away in the history we went well over time. You can book this tour at the Tourist Information Centre.

Fantastic way to see Fremantle through historical eyes
My mum and I only had a day to spend in Fremantle and this historical tour was the highlight! We persevered through some wild windy weather to explore the streets with expert guidance from Al. He assured us it only made the experience more authentic as we faced similar weather conditions as the early settlers did. I would highly recommend this tour to locals and visitors alike to get a sense of the interesting past of this place!

Fascinating tour
We had Al all to ourselves this afternoon and what a great insight he offers into the history of Fremantle.
The tours last a couple of hours and they flew by, Al’s enthusiasm and knowledge were a treat. We learnt details from the first settlers to the gold rush and about the families of Fremantle.
If you have a couple of hours to spare and an interest in history this is the tour to do.
Excellent value and not too strenuous.
